Appalachian Trail

Appalachian Trail - Wikipedia:

The Appalachian Trail, also called the A.T., is a hiking trail in the Eastern United States, extending almost 2,200 miles (3,540 km) between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine, and passing through 14 states. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy claims the Appalachian Trail to be the longest hiking-only trail in the world. More than three million people hike segments of the trail each year.

The trail was presented in 1921 & construction began several years later. Miraculously, the ~2200 mile long trail was constructed within a period of roughly three years - a herculean effort of epic proportions!

Interestingly enough, the trail is in a seemingly constant state of flux in that portions are relocated from time to time for a variety of reasons - mostly due to construction resulting from urban sprawl.

While Mount Katahdin in Maine has been consistently been the northern terminus, the southern terminus was relocated from its original establishment on Mount Oglethrope (Jasper, GA) to Springer Mountain (Amicola Falls State Park - Fanin County, GA).

The Georgia presence of the Appalchian Trail Golden Packet has also moved from it's original location on Springer Mountain to Mount Oglethorpe around 2017, then relocated back to Springer Mountain in 2024.

More details can be found in the ATGP Sites (Active) and ATGP Sites (Inactive) sections:

Appalachian Trail Golden Packet (ATGP) and the AT

Where would the Appalachian Trail Golden Packet event be without the Appalachian Trail?

Honestly - it might not have ever gotten off the ground.

The AT had a lot of special meaning to Bob and his family. We do everything we can to keep Bob's dream alive year after year.

Shameless Disclaimer

And, while we don't make much of a ruckus about it, we sincerely hope our efforts underscore our appreciation of the wonders the Appalachian Trail brings with it.

If we can encourage you in any way, please take a day - bring yourself - bring your family - bring a loved one... Pick one of your most favorite spots anywhere along the 2200+ mile length of the AT and just go visit it!

The history, the engineering work, the energy of it all...it just can't be put into words! You have to experience it for yourself!

The AT Conservancy can always benefit from donations. Not only was the AT build by volunteers, its ongoing maintenance is also done by volunteers.

Let's be realistic - even volunteer efforts cost money. A few dollars can go a long way! Please donate anything you can spare. It's one of the most beautiful one-of-a-kind resources throughout all of North America and we would like to see it continue for as long as possible!
